News Release - Greater Napanee Reaches First Milestone in In-Town Trail Development
(GREATER NAPANEE, ON) – The Town has successfully completed the first major milestone in the development of its new in-town trail, bringing the community one step closer to an expanded active transportation and recreation network.
Contractors have finished removing approximately 1,400 metres of rail along the former CN spur line between Dairy Avenue and the Highway 401 bridge. As part of the work, rails, spikes, and plates were removed, cut into sections, and transported to a local metal recycling facility. To facilitate access for specialized rail removal equipment, limited brushing and tree removal was also completed along sections of the trail.
The next phase of the project is scheduled to begin in early September and will be led by the Town’s Public Works staff. Work will include placing aggregate along the trail bed and conducting trailside vegetation control to prepare the trail for public use. Construction will then continue with the extension of the trail from the former CN spur line to Crouse Street. The route will cross County Road 1 and follow Church Street south to a loop connector through Riverside Cemetery before linking with existing cemetery roadways.
Once completed, the trail will form a key component of Greater Napanee's growing active transportation network, improving community connectivity and providing additional opportunities for outdoor recreation.
The project is anticipated to be complete by the end of October 2026. Residents are encouraged to follow the Town's communication channels for ongoing updates on the project.
