News Release - Greater Napanee Begins In-Town Trail Construction

(GREATER NAPANEE, ON) – The Town is pleased to announce that construction of the in-town trail is now underway, marking an important milestone in a project designed to expand recreational opportunities and improve active transportation connections throughout the community.

Residents can expect to see construction crews and equipment working along the trail corridor beginning this week. Initial work will include site preparation, grading, staking, and other work required to prepare the route for trail installation. During construction, residents may experience:

• Temporary closures or restricted access in active work areas
• Increased construction vehicle traffic near the project site
• Intermittent noise and dust during working hours
• Clearly marked detours and safety signage where required

The Town asks residents to use caution when travelling near construction zones, follow all posted signage, and respect safety barriers to help ensure the safety of both the public and construction crews.

Construction will progress in phases along the trail corridor. The first phase includes the placement of the initial layer of base stone along the former CN spur line trail bed, beginning at Dairy Avenue and continuing toward Industrial Boulevard. Work will then proceed from Industrial Boulevard to Camden Road, followed by the section between Camden Road and the Highway 401 bridge.

The second phase includes trail construction between the former rail bed and Crouse Street, with work continuing on the east side of Crouse Street toward County Road 1. The final phase of the project will extend along the east side of Church Street and include a connector loop through Town-owned property north of Riverside Cemetery.

Once complete, the trail will provide a safe, accessible, and enjoyable route for walking, cycling, running, and other recreational activities. The trail will strengthen connections between neighbourhoods and community amenities, while enhancing opportunities for active transportation and outdoor recreation.

Funding for the in-town trail project was approved through the Town’s 2026 Capital Budget, which includes a total project allocation of $70,000 funded entirely through development charges for materials and rail removal. In addition, the Town is contributing in-kind resources, including staff labour and equipment for a total of $151,255.

Throughout the development of the trail, the Town's Trails Development Advisory Committee will be providing recommendations to Council related to trail safety and security, amenities, service levels, and promotion to help guide the long-term success of the trail network.
