Media Release - Town of Greater Napanee to Receive Strong Mayor Powers

(GREATER NAPANEE, ON) – The Town of Greater Napanee was named as one of the
municipalities proposed to receive strong mayor powers effective May 1, 2025.

The powers would be legislated by the provincial government and would bring with them certain rights
and obligations mandated by the province. As part of the legislation, the Town would receive strong
mayor powers to ensure the municipality has the tools needed to reduce obstacles that can stand in
the way of new housing and infrastructure developments. The powers would allow the Town’s mayor
to support shared provincial-municipal priorities, such as encouraging the approval of new housing
and construction and maintaining infrastructure to support housing, including roads and transit.

Terry Richardson, Mayor for the Town of Greater Napanee explains the impact of the legislation.
Mayor Richardson states, “The Town of Greater Napanee, Mayor, Council, and staff are committed to
doing our part in helping to address the housing crisis that exists in our community. There are many
aspects that are required to bring this goal to fruition. This announcement is a piece to that puzzle
that will aid our community to reach our goals and beyond.”

A comprehensive report will be brought to Council to define the Town’s legislative obligations and
how to proceed. The Town is committed to working with the province to help enhance building homes
and infrastructure within the municipality.
