Smoke Alarms
The Ontario Fire Code requires that every home have working smoke alarms on each storey and outside all sleeping areas. Test your smoke alarms every month and change the batteries at least once a year.
For more information, please see the Smoke Alarm Information section of the Fire Marshall's website.
Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarms
If your home has a fuel burning appliance or an attached garage, install a carbon monoxide alarm adjacent to each sleeping area.
For added protection, install a carbon monoxide alarm on every storey of the home according to manufacturers instructions.
Fore more information on CO Alarms please check out the following resources:
Cooking fires account for 22% of all home fires and are the #2 cause of fatal fires in the home.
Ways to prevent a cooking fire:
Always stay in the kitchen while cooking. If you must leave, turn off the stove
Keep anything that burns - cooking utensils, dishcloths, paper towels and pot holders - a safe distance from the stove.
Loose-fitting clothes can come into contact with stove burners and catch fire. Wear tight sleeves or roll them up when cooking.
Home Escape Planning
Practicing a home fire escape plan so everyone knows what to do will help everyone safely escape a fire as quickly as possible. Visit our Emergency Preparedness page for information on preparing your family's emergency kit and action plan in case of a fire.
